GREENMAN: Joint efforts towards management of green urban territories in near border cities of Estonia, Latvia and Russia

“Border capitals” of Estonia, Latvia and Russia bordering regions will use new approach towards the management of green urban territories with the help of a special data base, elaborated by the staff of Pskov State University.

The Administration of Pskov City will get this unique data base of the city parks together with special software for the management of green urban territories. They both were elaborated by Pskov State University team within the framework of the Cross-border cooperation project of Estonia-Latvia-Russia CBC Programme “Tartu, Rezekne, Pskov: Green Management for Urban Development & Planning in EE-LV-RU Border Capitals” (GreenMan).

The Head of “Peipsi Project. Pskov” and Project manager of GreenMan Project, Olga Vasilenko was interviewed on the occasion by ITAR-TASS News Agency and explained that the scientists investigated and filed information about 7 public green zones; for example, it was found out that in Dendropark near Mirozhsky Monastery there are rare species of trees.

The system of management of green urban territories which will be launched and introduced by Pskov State University in the middle of June facilitates on-line monitoring of the state of green zones: the data bases and GIS-maps of parks can be uploaded to the tablet from the server and be updated on the spot by the municipality specialists working with tablets in the parks.

The GreenMan project lasting for two years aims at creating the system of management of green urban areas in all cities – participants of the project till the end of the year 2014. The project joins the efforts of public organizations, municipal authorities and universities of Tartu, Rezekne and Pskov to contribute to increasing greenery and attractiveness of the cities in Estonia, Latvia and Russia border area for their residents and visitors.
